Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Johanna James Hall was born in 7 September 1857 in Adelaide, South Australia – the daughter of Edward McGrath Hall, a striker, and Mary Jane James.

She sailed for Otago with her family in 1867 on the Gothenburg and they settled in Dunedin.

Johanna married Samuel McMurdie Strain, an accountant, on 18 December 1878 at her parents’ home in Great King St, Dunedin.

They had two sons and lived, at first, in Dunedin before moving to Christchurch where Johanna signed the suffrage petition.

Samuel died in Christchurch in 1915 – after Samuel’s death Johanna moved back to Dunedin where she died on 6 April 1944.

She is buried with Samuel in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
