Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Julia Ann Noone was born in 1849 in Stockley, Essex, England – the daughter of Henry Valentine Noone and Mary Ann Somersall.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family and married Robert Kirkwood, a carpenter, in 1875.

They had nine children, three who died in infancy.

When Julia signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Arthur St, Dunedin.

In May 1896 Robert died when he fell from a 16-ft high scaffold and hit his head on a block of wood.

After Robert’s death she moved to Auckland where her family lived.

She died on 6 December 1925 and is buried with Robert in the Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland.
