Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Janet Murray McLeod was born in 1863 in New Zealand – the daughter of Hugh McLeod, a teacher, and Janet Hume Inglis.
She married John Charles Cox, a butcher, in 1884 and they had eight children, one who died in infancy.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Gore.
In 1902 the butcher’s shop was sold and the family moved to Dunedin.
John was declared bankrupt in 1909 and the contents of their butcher’s shop in North East Valley was sold.
John appears to have died in Invercargill in 1916 and Janet died on 29 January 1917 – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
