Jane Mary Raine was born in 1859 in Durham, England – the daughter of Mark Raine and Jane Bird.
She married William Nuttall in 1878 and shortly after they boarded the Boyne bound for Canterbury.
William worked for the railways department and they had 10 children.
They lived in Springfield, Methven, Oxford, Christchurch and Wanganui before moving to Greymouth where Jane signed the suffrage petition.
William retired in Greymouth, after which they moved to Huntly and took up farming.
They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at Ruawaro, near Huntly, in 1928.
William died in 1938 and Jane died on 8 November 1954 – they are buried together in the Huntly Cemetery.
