Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jessie Irvine was born in 1858 in New Zealand – the eldest child of John Irvine, a farmer, and Mary Jane MacPherson.

She married William Nichol, a blacksmith, in 1879. They had four children and when Jessie signed the suffrage petiton they were living in Gore.

They later bought a farm at Brydone, south of Gore where William died in 1912.

Jessie died at Mataura on 26 February 1937 – she is buried with William in the Mataura Cemetery.
