Jane Lachlan was born about 1852 in Glasgow – the daughter of Thomas Lachlan, a flesher, and Jean McKie Baird.
She emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Nelson and she married contractor, William Ogilvie.
They lived in Christchurch and had six children. William was declared bankrupt in 1885 and, in 1887, the family moved to the West Coast.
William died in 1890 and Jane signed the suffrage petition at Greymouth.
In 1898 she was working as a laundress for the Westland Hospital.
In 1914 Jane, accompanied by her daughter, sailed for London for a visit to the 'Old Land'.
She died on 4 February 1930 and is buried with William in the Karoro Cemetery.
