Jessie Plane Black was born about 1856, possibly in Australia, – the daughter of Thomas Stuart Grant, a contractor, and Jessie Grant.
She did not marry and when she signed the suffrage petition was living in Kirkland Hill, Kaikorai, Dunedin working as a dressmaker.
She had been living with her father who had died two years before.
Later in life she went to live in Oamaru near her sister Jane Ann Cathcart.
Jessie died in Oamaru on 10 August 1931, she is buried in the Oamaru Cemetery with her sister.
