Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet Robson McLeod was born on February 18th1865 in Renfrewshire, Scotland – the eldest child of Neil McLeod, a blacksmith, and Beatrice Robson. (See 132 Mrs N McLeod

Janet’s family emigrated to New Zealand in 1880 but Janet did not accompany them – she may have arrived earlier.

Janet’s family lived in Mataura, where she signed the suffrage petition, although at the time she was living in Dunedin working as a machinist.

She married Alfred Allen, a potter, in 1897 and they lived at Sawyers Bay between Dunedin and Port Chalmers.

Alfred died in 1924 and Jessie died on 30 June 1946 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
