Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Martin was born in 1855 in Green Island, near Dunedin – the daughter of William Martin, a nurseryman, and Mary Kirkland.

She married Frederick Seaton, a gardener, on 7 December 1887 in the Green Island parish.

They had one daughter and when Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Mosgiel.

Their daughter died in 1917 and shortly afterwards they moved to Fairfield where Frederick died in 1926.

After Frederick’s death Jane returned to Mosgiel where she died on 14 May 1937 – they are buried with their daughter in the East Taieri Cemetery.

Jane’s obituary said 'though somewhat retiring in disposition, Mrs Seaton had a large circle of friends'.
