Jane Ann Hume was born on 21 October 1858 in Shapinsay, Orkney, Scotland – the daughter of John Hume, a ships master, and Barbara Smith.
Her father died when she was young and her mother re-married in 1866.
Jane married James Tulloch in Shapinsay in 1884 and they emigrated to New Zealand soon after.
They had four children and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were farming at Romahapa in South Otago.
In the 1900s the family moved to Pahiatua then to Kohukohu in the Bay of Islands.
James was declared bankrupt in 1926 – he died in 1929.
Jane died at her son’s home in Onehunga on 15 July 1949, she is buried with James in the Umawera Cemetery.
Jane’s obituary said she 'was a keen member of the Women’s Institute movement and was an ardent worker in the interests of the Presbyterian Church. Until a short while before her death, Mrs Tulloch enjoyed good health and was remarkably active.'
