Biography contributed by Helen Edwards.
Jane Stewart/Stuart was the daughter of Elizabeth Crookston and Alexander Penrice Stuart. She was born on 21 November 1851 in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, and emigrated to New Zealand about 1863. She married Canadian-born Edgeworth Richard Ussher on 3 September 1874, at the Andersons Bay Presbyterian Church. Ussher was born on 15 June 1839 in Hamilton, Ontario. His parents were Harriet Rebecca Colclough and Samuel Ussher. At the time of their marriage he was already living in Frederick Street, Roslyn (now Sheen Street), employed as Resident Engineer in the Public Works Office. Jane gave birth to eleven children between 1875 and 1892, the second being stillborn. When Edgeworth Richard died in 1916, aged 76, his address was 15 Sheen Street. Jane died on 11 February 1925, aged 74, and is buried in Dunedin’s Northern Cemetery with her husband and four of her children.
