Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Frew was born in 1865 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Frew, a government messenger, and Jane Kerr.

She married Roland Waghorn, a painter and decorator, on 18 February 1886 in Dunedin and they had four children.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Castle Street.

Roland was declared bankrupt in 1905, he explained that he had erected a large warehouse at the foot of Stuart St the value of which had greatly depreciated due to the closure of the street.

In later life they move to Palmerston North where Jane died on 15 August 1943 and Roland died the following year, they are buried together in the Kelvin Grove Cemetery.
