Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Pickersgill was born in 1856 in Bunbury, Western Australia – the daughter of Joshua Pickersgill, a tanner and freed convict, and Ann Bolland.

In 1874 she arrived in Lyttelton on the James Hannell from Fremantle accompanied by her sister Elizabeth.

She married Edward Robert Rowntree, a carpenter, in December 1880 in Dunedin and they had five children.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Cumberland Street and Edward was working as a 'bird dealer'.

They later moved to Wellington where Edward worked as a 'wire worker'.

Edward died in 1905 and Jane died on 23 May 1908 – they are buried together in the Karori Cemetery.
