Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Neilson Hamilton was born about 1839 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of George Hamilton, a clerk, and Jane.

She emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1860s with her two sisters and married Alexander Armstrong, a clerk, on 13 October 1864 in Dunedin.

They do not appear to have had any children.

Alexander died in New South Wales, Australia in 1883 and when Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living in Albany St, Dunedin with her niece Kate.

In 1896 Jane advertised in the paper 'Lady giving Lessons in Maori wishes few more Pupils.'

Jane died at Beaumont, South Otago on 26 December 1900, her place of burial is unknown.
