Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Berry was born on 2 May 1840 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire, Scotland – the daughter of William Berry, a hand loom weaver, and Elizabeth Melrose.

She emigrated to New Zealand and married John Blaikie, a carpenter, in 1874. They had three children and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Clyde St, Mornington, Dunedin.

John died in 1910 and Jane died on 5 December 1923. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
