Jane Patterson was born about 1835 in Scotland.
She emigrated to New Zealand in the late 1850s and she married James Carter in 1859.
They lived in Waikouaiti where Jane signed the suffrage petition and where James worked as a labourer.
James died at their home in 1902 and Jane died at Seacliff Hospital on January 1st 1915. They are buried together in the Waikouaiti Cemetery.
