Jane McEwan was born on 27 August 1849 in Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of John McEwan, a shoemaker and Susanna McLachlan.

Jane emigrated to New Zealand and on 14 October 1870, at Knox Church, Dunedin, she married James Chambers.

The family lived at Reid Rd, South Dunedin and had four children.

James, a mariner, died in 1882 aged 49. Jane died on 6 December 1928, they are both buried in the Southern Cemetery.
