Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Elizabeth Butler was born about 1850 in England.
She emigrated to New Zealand where she married Albert Dorset Chapman, an upholsterer and widower with two children, on 9 June 1876 at the Dunedin Registrar’s Office.
They had a daughter the following year and they lived in Invercargill then in Dunedin.
Albert appears to have died or left the family around the 1880s as, in 1889, Jane was in court after being defrauded by a customer at her boarding house in Dunedin.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living in Forth St, Linden in Roslyn.
By 1925 she had moved to Christchurch where she died at her daughter’s home on 10 January 1929 – she is buried in the Bromley Cemetery.
