Jane Loudon was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1859 – the daughter of Alexander Loudon and Ellen Wilson.
The family came to New Zealand in the 1860s and they settled in Lawrence in Central Otago.
Jane married James Gunning Closs, a teacher, on 9 March 1882 at her parents’ home 'Burnside', near Lawrence.
They had four children, one who died in infancy, and they lived at Waitahuna Gully, Lawrence and Livingstone where Jane signed the suffrage petition.
In 1894 they moved to Alexandra where James worked as headmaster of the school.
He died in 1908 in Dunedin shortly after an operation.
Jane then moved to Dunedin where she died on 26 September 1939, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
