Hannah Jane Campbell Peterson, known as Jane, was born in 1852 in New Zealand – the daughter of Peter Peterson, a farmer, and Mary Smith.
She married Albert Cross, an inspector of public works, on 18 March 1874 in Dunedin and they had two daughters.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Mornington, Dunedin.
Albert died in 1937, aged 90 and Jane died on 6 July 1956, at the age of 104.
She was cremated and her ashes buried with Albert in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
