Jane Marshall was born about 1845 in Paisley, Scotland – the daughter of Francis Marshall, a weaver, and Margaret Crawford.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1848 on the Philip Laing and they settled near Dunedin.
Jane married David Dewar on 5 June 1865 in Dunedin and they had four children.
The family settled on a farm on the Tokomairiro Plain before moving to Milton then to Ratanui near Owaka.
Jane signed the suffrage petition in Ratanui - they later moved to Gore where David died in 1915.
Jane died at their daughter’s home on 25 June 1918, they are buried in the Ratanui Cemetery.
