Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Bonar was born about 1829 in Glasgow, Scotland, and she married William Gibson, a shoemaker, on 11 January 1852 in Glasgow.

They had nine children in Glasgow, although at least three died in childhood, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Janet Court. The family lived in Walker St, Dunedin. Their daughter Jane also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.

Jane died on 27 December 1903 at her home and William died in 1906. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
