Jane Campbell was born on 21 April 1856 in Swinton, Berwickshire, Scotland – the daughter of Donald Campbell, a farmer, and Helen King.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1860 on the Robert Henderson and she married David Gilbert, a painter, in the Balclutha Parish on 24 May 1877.
They had six children and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Gore.
In the late 1890s the family moved to Christchurch where Jane died on 7 September 1902, she is buried in the Linwood Cemetery.
David re-married the following year – he died in 1941 and is buried in the St Johns Churchyard, Wakefield.
