Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:

Jane Goodeve (nee Duddy) was born around 1848 in St Pancras, Middlesex, the daughter of butcher Edward Duddy and his wife Elizabeth. Jane attended a boarding school in Barnham, Surrey.

In 1869 Jane married a farmer named Francis Goodeve. They lived at Ferncliff Villa, Petersfield, Southampton and later at East Liss, Hampshire. The couple had three children, Mary Martha (or May, 1871-), Edith (1873-) and William Thomas (1877-). May Martha also signed the Petition.

The family immigrated to New Zealand sometime between 1885 and 1890 and lived in Serpentine Ave, Dunedin.

Jane died in 1939, aged 90, and is buried with her husband in Anderson’s Bay Cemetery.
