They had four children in Scotland before they boarded the Invercargill in 1879 bound for Otago.

Their fifth child, John, was born on board the ship and eight more children followed.

The family lived in the Hawthorndale subdivision of Roslyn in Dunedin where Jane signed the suffrage petition.

Jane died at her home in Edward St, Kaikorai on 28 March 1912, she is buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.

James died in Balclutha in 1938, he is buried in the Grieve family grave in the East Taieri Cemetery.
