Jane Hope McClymont (nee Bell) was born 24 April 1835 in Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, the daughter of William Bell and Mary Bell (nee Hope). She married William McClymont in 1863 in Kirkcudbrightshire.
After the birth of their first daughter, Stewart, the family immigrated to New Zealand on the Peter Denny in 1865. They settled in Milton, Otago, where Jane had a dress shop and William was a tailor. They had seven more children in Milton: Mary Bell (1866), James Carter (1868-), Douglas (1870-), Hugh Graham (1872-), Robert (1874-), Margaret McMajor (1876-) and John Bell (1877-).
Jane died in February 1905.
