Jane Marion Gray Hamilton was born in Victoria, Australia in 1860 – the daughter of James Kirkwood Hamilton and Marion Turnbull Whitelaw.
The family emigrated to New Zealand about 1861 and James worked as an ironmonger.
Jane did not marry and died at Waitati near Dunedin on 29 December 1946. She is buried in the Waitati Cemetery.
