Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Grant was born about 1813 in Banffshire, Scotland.
She married George Hay, a saddler, on 17 November 1838 in Huntly, Aberdeen – they had three children in Scotland before they moved to England in the mid 1840s where two sons were born. The family sailed for Otago in 1848 on the Ajax arriving at Port Chalmers in January 1849.
They stayed in a tent at Port Chalmers for six weeks before sailing for Port Molyneux in a small boat.
Three further children were born in Otago, the family eventually settling on their farm 'Hilly Park'.
George died in 1876 and when Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living at Romahapa.
She died on 31 December 1907 and is buried with George in the family grave in the Romahapa Cemetery.
