Lavinia Jane, known as Jane, Terrell was born in 1848 in St Blazey, Cornwall – the daughter of John Terrell, a tin miner, and Rachel Hicks.
She married Samuel Nicholas Higgs in 1874 and they emigrated to New Zealand shortly after.
They settled in Dunedin where they had four children and when Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Mornington.
Samuel died in 1922 and Jane died on 26 May 1934 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
