Jane Lang was born about 1842 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of David Lang, a pipe maker, and Catherine McIndoe.
She married John Hood, a shoemaker, on 10 April 1863 in Glasgow and they had four children, two who died in infancy, before they emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Mairi Bhan.
They had three more children after their arrival and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Stafford Rd, now Fawcett St, in South Dunedin.
Jane died on 24 May 1899 and John died in 1909, they are both buried in the Southern Cemetery.
