Jane Miller was born about 1843 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Miller, a cabinet maker, and Janet Montgomery.
She married Samuel Lister, a printmaker, on 17 July 1862 in Edinburgh and they had two children before they emigrated to Auckland in 1865 on the Resolute.
They had a further six children in New Zealand.
Not long after their arrival the family moved to Dunedin and when Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Bathgate St, South Dunedin.
Jane died on 30 July 1901 and Samuel died in 1913, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
