Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Jane Matthew/Mathie was born about 1834 in Glasgow.
She married Daniel Lockhart, a brickmaker, in 1855 and they had 10 children, two who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1876 on the “Oamaru”.
They settled in Dunedin where Daniel worked as an engine keeper.
In 1879 their only surviving son Daniel died in the Kaitangata mine explosion.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family was living in at their home “Williamsburgh” in Mornington.
Daniel died in 1901 and Jane died on 7 July 1921 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
