Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane/Jeannie Troup was born on 18 May 1854 in Aberdeen, Scotland – the daughter of George Troup, a linen agent, and Jane Gildawie.
She married George Mackenzie, a surveyor, on 22 October 1877 in Edinburgh and shortly after they emigrated to Otago.
They settled in Dunedin where their two sons were born.
In the late 1890s the family moved to Queenstown where Jane signed the suffrage petition and where their youngest son died in 1896 due to rheumatic fever and congestion of the lungs.
In May 1908 Jane and George went on a 'trip to the Old Land, in the course of which they have planned to visit the Ramabai’s homes' in India - Jane was the general secretary for the New Zealand of Ramabai’s Mission Auxilliary.
After they returned home Jane held Mission sales of 'Indian, Oriental, and Continental Goods, Wares, and Novelties' to raise funds for the Mission.
In 1913 a 'successful garden fete was held in Mr George Mackenzie’s grounds, Queenstown...to raise funds to erect a hospital and other buildings at the Ko T’ong, Canton Village Mission, China' - £55 was raised.
George died later that year and Jane died at Lake County Hospital on 9 July 1935, they are buried together in the Queenstown Cemetery.
