Jane Miles was born in 1853 in Herefordshire, England, the daughter of Robert Miles, and agricultural labourer, and Elizabeth Berrington.
Jane emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Otago accompanied by her younger sister and her newly-married older sister.
She married John Andrew McLauchlan, a cab driver, on 22 May 1877 at the house of Sarah Bissland, Howe St, Dunedin. They had a son who died aged one week.
When she signed the suffrage petition Jane was living in Clarendon St, Dunedin. Jane and John later adopted a daughter who was born about 1897.
John died in 1922. Jane died on 22 June 1934. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
