Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Thomson was born on 27 March 1859 in Berwickshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Thomson, a ploughman, and Jane Trotter.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in the late 1860s on the William Davie and they settled in South Otago.

Jane worked as a dressmaker before she Jane married Daniel McPherson, a storekeeper, on 7 November 1889 and they had two daughters.

When she signed the suffrage petition they were living at Fairfax, near Milton.

Daniel died in 1902, leaving Jane with two young children – she sold the store at Fairfax in 1903 and moved into Milton.

Jane died at her daughter’s home on 7 June 1938 – she is buried with Daniel in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
