Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane/Jean Gray was born on 1 October 1826 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Gray, a cotton hand loom weaver, and Jean Craw.

She married William Neill, an ironstone miner, about 1846 and they had 11 children before William died in 1869.

The family emigrated to New Zealand on the William Davie, arriving in Wellington in 1872.

They settled in Otago and when Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living at Sandymount on the Otago Peninsula where her sons were farming.

Jane died at her home on 26 April 1898, she is buried with her daughter in the Southern Cemetery.
