Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Barclay was born about 1834 in Scotland.
She married William McDonald Nelson, a painter, on 2 June 1857 in Manchester, England.
They appear to have returned to Scotland shortly after where their son James was born before they returned to Lancashire where they had a further two sons, both who died in infancy.
Jane emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1882 on the Liguria accompanied by her son and his wife – William had presumably travelled earlier.
William died in Victoria in 1886, he is buried in the Boroondara General Cemetery.
After William’s death Jane sailed for Otago to join her son in Dunedin. When she signed the suffrage petition she was living in Andersons Bay Road, Kensington.
Margaret died at her home on 2 September 1913 – she is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
