Originally transcribed as Jane Ormand
Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Brown Cuddy/Cuddie was born about 1853 in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of David Cuddy, a cotton handloom weaver, and Matilda Kelly.
She emigrated to New Zealand and married Joseph Osmond, a carpenter, in 1873. Joseph’s name was originally Joseph Settle, he was a brother of Matilda Settle (See 37 M E Kaye) and is possibly the Joseph Settle alias Ormond who was charged with attempting to procure abortion in Christchurch in 1869.
Jane and William had 13 children, three who died in infancy and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Cargill Rd, South Dunedin.
Joseph served as a councillor for the borough of South Dunedin and was Mayor for a time.
Joseph died at their home on 18 April 1910 – shortly after, on 11 May, Jane also died, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
