Jane Gibson was born on 3 October 1860 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of William Gibson, a bootmaker, and Jane Bonar.

Jane emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Janet Court.

She married Charles Edward Rayner in 1879, they had seven children, two dying in infancy.

In 1903 and 1904 Charles was in court charged with not paying maintenance towards the keep of one of their sons in the Industrial School.

Jane died in the Dunedin Hospital on 10 October 1905, aged 42 and Charles died in 1916. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
