Jane Sutherland Nichol was born on 23 September 1843 in Minto, Roxburghshire in Scotland – the daughter of William Nichol, a factor, and Catherine Rutherford.
She emigrated to New Zealand with her family around 1875 and they settled in the Waikaka Valley, north of Gore.
Jane married farmer Alexander McQueen on 27 September 1877 in Invercargill.
They had four children, one who died in infancy, and when Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living at Waikaka.
Jane died at their home Carslae at Waikaka on 9 January 1905 and Alexander died in 1914 – they are buried together in the Waikaka Cemetery.
