Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Jane Susan Fleury was born about 1831 in Guernsey, Channel Islands. She married Stephen Stevens, a grocer and inn keeper, on 5 September 1853 in St Saviour, Jersey and they had two children.
Jane emigrated to Otago with her children in 1879 on the Oamaru – presumably Stephen had arrived earlier.
They settled in Dunedin and when Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in North East Valley.
Stephen died in 1897 and Jane died at her daughter’s home on 3 July 1923 – she is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
