Janet/Jane Seaton was born in 1861 in New Zealand – the daughter of George McCartney, a farmer, and Elizabeth Alexander.
She married James Hutcheson Seaton, a gardener, on 24 December 1885 at 'Roselle', Portobello and they had three daughters.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Portobello on the Otago Peninsula.
They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1935.
Janet died at their home on 4 September 1937 and James died in 1943, they are buried in the family grave in the Portobello Cemetery.
