Jane Riddle was born in Invercargill on 15 September 1863. Her parents Robert and Alison Riddell (or Riddle) arrived at Bluff on the Flying Mist, which hit a sandbar on Monday 25 August 1862.
Jane spent her first 10 years in Invercargill before travelling, with her family, to Orepuki where her father worked as a carpenter.
Jane married Thomas Slaughter at the Riverton Manse on 7 January 1884. The couple had 10 children all of whom reached adulthood. At the time Jane signed the petition she had 7 children.
Jane was widowed in 1920 and she died in October 1938. She is buried in the Orepuki Cemetery.
