Also known as: Jane Susannah Uren; Jane Susannah Walker
Born 1843 in England to Joseph Hartley Walker (circa 1816) and Jane Atha (circa 1816), the only daughter of five children. Aged four, she immigrated to Australia on the Serpent with her parents. Landing at Geelong, Point Henry, Victoria, on 29 June 1849.
In 1861 Jane married John Ellis Uren (born 16 February 1834 in Madron, Cornwall, England). John arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, on 1 July 1857 travelling on SS Indiana. Living in Ballarat, Elizabeth Jane was born in 1862, Selina 1863, Louisa 1865, John Henry 1867, Joseph Albert James 1869, and William Alfred Earnest 1871.
They emigrated to New Zealand. In 1873 Charles Edward was born, followed by Richard Ellis in 1876, Lavinia Priscilla Ellis in 1878, Fredrick Arthur Ellis in 1880, and Robert Hartley in 1882.
Jane signed the women’s suffrage petition in 1893. In 1896 she still resided in Ensors Rd, Christchuch, as recorded on the petition.
John died on 18 November 1896 and is buried in Linwood Cemetary, Christchurch. Jane remarried on 24 April 1899 to Edmund Smart in Christchurch.
Jane died on 16 November 1918 and is buried in Linwood Cemetary.
