Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Janet Black was born on 11 January 1858 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of Andrew Black, a librarian, and Mary Buchanan.
Janet emigrated to Otago in 1864 on the Vectis with her family. The Vectis was a cargo ship which carried 75 passengers. The immigration officer who inspected the ship on its arrival called it 'the dirtiest ship I ever boarded'.
Janet lived with her family in Maitland St, Dunedin. She did not marry. Her sister Anderina also signed the suffrage petition.
Janet died on 21 August 1943 and she was buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
