Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Janet Howie McCartney was born about 1849 in Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas McCartney, a railway porter, and Anne Affleck.
By 1861 the family had moved to Glasgow where Janet’s father worked as a carpet weaver and where she married William Inglis on 7 August 1868.
They had three children, one who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Nelson.
They settled in East Taieri where William worked as a carpenter and they had a further five children before William died in 1888.
After William’s death the family moved to Mosgiel where Janet signed the suffrage petition.
Janet died on 12 November 1926 at Petone – she is buried with Wiliam in the East Taieri Cemetery.
