Janet Watson Burgess was born about 1864 in Scotland.

She emigrated to New Zealand and she married John Wallace King, a storeman, in 1888.

They had six children, one who died in infancy, and when Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Bluff.

In 1913 John died at work when he fell under a train which was being shunted into a siding.

Janet died on 30 September 1953, they are buried with their infant son in the Bluff Cemetery.
