Janet Armour Michie was born on 7 September 1858 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of William Michie, a builder, and Janet Armour.
Janet emigrated to Otago with her family in 1862 on the Pladda and they settled on the Otago Peninsula.
She married Horace Johnston Kitt, a portmanteau maker, on 15 March 1884 at her family home.
Horace was declared bankrupt in 1886 but continued to trade.
They had 7 children and, when Janet signed the suffrage petition, they were living in St Andrew St, Dunedin.
Horace died in 1920 and Janet died on 8 February 1924, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
