Janet McGill was born on 10 October 1828 in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire, Scotland – the daughter of David McGill, a hand loom weaver, and Agnes Nish.
She married Joseph Lister on 6 January 1859 in Stoneykirk and their first child was born at the end of the year in Glasgow.
The family emigrated to New Zealand – they settled in Milton where they had a further three children and where Joseph worked as a flour miller.
Joseph died in Milton in 1890 and when Janet signed the suffrage petition she was still living in Milton.
She died at her daughter’s home in Milton on 10 January 1902 – they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
