Janet Smart was born on February 13th 1859 in Whitburn, West Lothian, Scotland, the daughter of Michael Smart, a labourer, and Janet Meek.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Invercargill, and they settled in Dunedin.

Janet married Rupert Randle, a storeman, on April 28th 1881 in Dunedin. They had three children.

When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Bright St, Belleknowes.

Rupert died in 1934, and Janet died on June 18th 1936. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
